in collaboration with the OzonAction Programme
Welcome to Saint Lucia's National Ozone Website
Saint Lucia is a Party to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. As a Party, St. Lucia must phase out the use of ozone depleting substances (ODSs) according to the stipulated phase out schedule.
In response to Saint Lucia’s obligations under the Protocol, the National Ozone Unit of Saint Lucia in collaboration with the OzonAction Programme has developed this website as part of its implementation and monitoring phase out activities.
Thus this website will seek to promoted national and regional initiatives, link stakeholders by providing an avenue for exchange of information and provide an interactive interface for the general public to access information on ozone layer depletion efforts.
Latest Ozone Protection developments in Saint Lucia
 Saint Lucia Launches its HPMP
Saint Lucia joined the rest of the world in the phase out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)! Saint Lucia's HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan (HPMP) was launched on Wednesday, 14th September 2011. Click here to visit the HCFC HELP CENTRE where you will find more information about:
- Use of
HCFCs
- List of HCFCs controlled under the Montreal Protocol
- Alternative to HCFCs for new equipment and applications
- Refrigerant blends containing HCFCs
- Links to publications about HCFCs
Saint Lucia goes to COP and MOP
Saint Lucia was represented at the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP9) to the Vienna
Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the 23rd Meeting of the
Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone
Layer (MOP23) in Bali, Indonesia, 21-25 November 2011.
HCFC Phase-out - A unique Opportunity for Saint Lucia!
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2011 was celebrated in Saint Lucia in a number of different ways. Indeed, Saint Lucia recognizes that the ability to optimize climate
benefits is extremely reliant on the level of greenhouse gas emissions from substitutes
and the energy efficiency of alternative technologies that are used to replace
HCFCs. Consequently, this acceleration presents Saint Lucia and other countries
with a unique opportunity to benefit from cutting-edge technologies that will
assist in the elimination if ozone-depleting substances in addition to a
reduction in national energy expenditure.

Release of a New Ozone Documentary Video
A new 15 minutes documentary video entitled
“The Antarctic Ozone Hole from Discovery to Recovery’ by the UNEP Division of
Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) OzonAction Programme. The documentary attempts to describe in layman
terms, the evolution of the Antarctic Ozone Hole from its discovery in 1985 through
to the present day situation. According to the UNEP website “this scientific
journey recorded in a short documentary, is not a portrait of a planet in
crisis” but one where some of the leading atmospheric scientists offer hope and
solutions. To view the video, please click here.
